Yanai Kadu
( elephant forest)
Yarnai Kardu is
a large scale project.comprising of 79 acres which was purchased in
1996. The previous owner had completely destroyed the indigenous
forest. We planted 12,000 trees ( silver oak). These are used to
support pepper plants and offer shade and stability to the land.
Stevia, and Robusta coffee is also grown here as well as medicinal
plants. ( pathi mohun:blood purifier. Tipali: coughs and colds) 40
cattle graze the forest and keep the soil fertile. Frequent visitors
include Elephants, sambar deer, Leopards and bears. We co-exist
happily with the animals although some of our neighbours see them as
alien and a threat to their livelihood. We believe it is possible to
live in patnership, although of course these animals can be
dangerous and caution must be observed. It is for the nature lovers
that yarnai Kardu will appeal to. Accomodation here is basic but
life enhancing.
Spring Valley is where we live! It
covers 6.4 acres and is mostly plantation. We bought it in 1992 and
went organic in 94. We have been reclaiming the land after it was
destroyed by intensive rice and tapioca cultivation. We use lots of
compost and cowdung. Now we have reached the stage where digging is
no longer necessarry because millions of earthworms do the work for
us! Pepper, coffee, Cardoman, vegetables and vanilla are grown here
as well as 2 dogs, one cat, 4 rabbits, 10 cows, four children,
Fatima and Harry Treitinger!
